Twelve Frames With Jack Brookes

Jack Brookes recently had a spare day between work in Bora Bora; let that sentence sink in. So many people become photographers so they can travel the world and see a boatload more than they ever would in a cubicle in any city. Jack is pretty young as well, and he’s already been roaming around the globe creating beautiful photographs on the way.

It’s pretty clear from Jack’s captions that he’s pretty switched on and his photo for #9 is going to melt some hearts out there. As well as shooting for Tourism South Australia and assisting internationally, Jack is always taking mini trips out his hometown Adelaide learn more about his backyard.

We’re looking forward to seeing more of Jack’s adventures and hearing about his time exploring. I hope this edition of Twelve Frames gives you an equally fervid desire to get out of town and into the sea as it did me.

As always, kick back, sit down with your avocado toast and take five minutes for some inspiration. Enjoy Twelve Frames with Jack Brookes.

In your own words, what do you do?

Be sarcastic and take photos.

What are you working on right now?

I’ve been spending most of my time travelling across Asia and often further over the last 18 months as an assistant on commercial shoots. I’ve been mixing this with freelancing and working on my own projects in between. I love being outdoors and travelling. From that my photography has focused on this, but I’m enjoying working through the challenges of other work and seeing what could come of it.

When did you shoot the roll?

In May 2018. I’d travelled to French Polynesia for a shoot. I had a day to myself so I hired a bike and cruised around the island.

Where did you shoot the roll?

Bora Bora, French Polynesia

Take a frame at first light

First light and first frame of the day. Roll could have done with another crank – off to a good start. Now to wait for sunrise.

Tree of the day

You know you’re in for a good time if these fellas are surrounding the place.

Shoot a space you feel creative in

Creativity for me always comes when outside exploring somewhere new and trying to do them justice. Whether it results in creative images at that time or being in my own head with ideas brewing for later. This summed up my day though, hiring a bike, cruising around the island and stopping off to take in scenes like this.

Shoot the weather

Surrounded by blue above and below, days in the tropics don’t get much better.

Shoot a stranger

A wild day for me; just another for him.

Shoot your backyard

Not mine, but if only.

Take a self-portrait outside

Failed self-portrait of myself in the reflection. Guess I’ll just have to go back.

Shoot the contents of your bag

Usual suspects and essentials for a day of riding around the island. Ryan Holiday’s book fast became a favourite.

Photograph someone you love

The phone isn’t the subject of this one – that’s a love-hate relationship – but my girlfriend on the wallpaper. She’s forever supportive and the phone helps soften the blow of being away from her, friends and family.

Shoot something that makes you happy

Diving head first into here. No matter what’s going on, this always seems to be the perfect reset. Thanks Mother Nature.

Take a frame at last light

The backdrop of Bora Bora as a tropical storm closes in taking away the last of the day’s light.

Shoot yourself before bed

Fancy hotel bathrooms and a bloke who wouldn’t be any more phased if he was sleeping in his van with the ocean for a shower. But grateful to be here, working and having time to go and explore.
